It most likely is a sign of dominance rather than mating. Turtles won't be able to mate until they are a few years old like (5 yrs?)
Mississippi Map turtles are not aggressive turtles so just keep an eye on them make sure there's places the little guy can go hide from your Map, and keeping lettuce in the tank is a good idea for them to munch on.

Also I don't think a RES and Map will/should mate, as that would result in a hybrid turtle who would be a weaker species. With this, you still don't know what genders your babies. The turtle dance is normal, but since your baby is a lot smaller just keep watch that it's not to often and won't cause your baby stress.
If if does you can also buy cheap tank separators at any fish/reptile store that you just insert in your tank for a wall.
