Hello! Around 8pm, I was driving down State Road 72 at 55 mph, and cars in front of me swerving around a small chelonian. I pulled over thinking it was a Florida box turtle, and was going to help across the road. Imagine my surprise and delight when I picked up an :<3: East Hermann's tortoise :<3: a good 3 miles from the nearest neighborhood.

Somebody must be missing it. If you know who, let me know!!

Are you sure it's an Eastern? Seems like the Westerns are more common. What a lucky find. And how lucky for the tortoise! A lot of times drivers try to hit them on purpose.

(edit: I think I may have it backwards - the Easterns are more common??????)

Yvonne, I'm pretty sure it's an Eastern, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it. I'll take a pic tomorrow to share. He's sleeping right now, don't want to disturb him. ;)

Maybe a boettgari? I'm far from knowledgeable about the Hermanni. I was trying to compare your find to Chris's pictures on the Hermanni section. He's a very pretty-looking specimen, whatever he is.
