I got a call about my missing tortoise but it wasn't him:( however I brought him home and was wondering if he belongs to anybody. He was on the path behind the Harvester Baptist Church.

It could just be a wild tortoise. And how could you let a tortoise escape?!

Sorry to hear about your tortoise. This guy is cute, but is it a tortoise? I'm no expert, but this guy looks like a wild box turtle. Where do you live? Maybe some can help with species ID.

Yep thats a box turtle . It would be best to take it back to the place you found him . These guys are territorial and don't need to be put in somebody else's territory.

Eastern box turtles are protected in their home range. Find out if they're native to your state and if so, take him back to where he was found and release him (if its safe to do so).

Happens all the time...they climb out, they dig out, someone left a gate open, a bird carried it off, a dog carried it off...you hear these stories all the time. (and we try to not be too judgemental here on the Forum. Accidents happen)
