I have a nice pesticide free lawn where I want to bring the hatchlings for some natural sunlight, grazing and exercising.

I made this frame (attached picture) that is quite heavy and sinks well in the lawn so the babies can't escape from below.

First use and 2 have escaped after leaving them alone for a few moments!? I dont understand how they disappeared and where they have been hiding 3 days now. I suspect they didnt escape the frame but dug themselves inside the lawn below the surface.

I thought of using a mesh on the frame so they are contained but I dont know if it can harm their legs since they will be continously be tripping on it.

Has anyone came up with a solution how to effectively contain them in a temporary enclosure?

A chicken wire over top would be sufficient. THe only issue I see is that the OSB you have on there is horrible when exposed to water and will warp and fall apart very fast
