Don’t feel stupid! So many people have made that error of judgement and bought one of those wooden ‘tortoise houses’.
I wouldn’t have known why they aren’t appropriate before joining this forum either, it’s all a learning curve and it’s nice we can learn new things from one another on here
Do you know what kind of set up you want to go with moving forward? There’s multiple options, some might even work out cheaper which is a bonus
I’d go the grow tent route, a smart enclosure or a vivarium the size you need until they can go outside would be pricey.

DIY is also a good option, you could make your own base, line with cheap pond liner, then get a greenhouse topper, or make your own topper out of timber and pvc panels
