FWS implementing section 4(d) of the ESA for the Egyptian Tortoise

The FWS is implementing the 4(d) rule. Section 4(d) of the ESA allows the Service to issue regulations necessary to conserve imperiled species. Accordingly, the Service is proposing a 4(d) rule for the Egyptian tortoise that would prohibit import, export, take, possession and other acts associated with the commercial trade of the species.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today listed the Egyptian tortoise -- a terrestrial reptile from Libya, Egypt and Israel -- as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. The Service is also implementing a 4(d) rule to provide for further conservation safeguards for the species.

When they say it's poaching and loss of habitat in the same sentence I wonder 🤔 if they truely know what they are saying. I don't agree with taking animals out of the wild but loss of habitat means they don't have a healthy home to live in anyway.

Preventing people in other countries where these tortoises do not occur from captive breeding captive bred animals and selling the babies to other breeders so that we maintain a genetically diverse captive assurance population, is not helpful to species conservation. Your cynicism is fully justified.

There's a lot of high powered people changing laws. Trying to educate all of us stupid people, when they talk out of both sides of their mouths. It's about money for licenses. They say it's lack of habitat that's causing the decline and I believe that is the main reason. Mother nature should take her fair share of blame also. They have no place to live. But in the same breath they're saying it's poaching so they have an excuse to arrest you unless you license yourself. $$$$ If those people truely cared they would be supportive of the people that have dedicated their lives to supporting these animals instead of making their lives harder.
