How big is the animal in the picture? If it is over 4" it is almost certainly a female. Very pretty by the way. Douglas

She is a beautiful little tort. Well not so little at 5 1/2 inches. My vote is a female.

Hi Chris,

Testudo hermanni hercegovinensis is a new term for me. Does it make her different from a Eastern or Western?

Thanks

Yes it is different. It is a somewhat newly recognized subspecies of the Hermann's tortoise known as the "Dalmatian Tortoise." Care is the same but is seen as kind of an "in-between" the eastern and western. It known to stay smaller than the eastern but not as small as the western. It is more on the abundant side like the eastern and is not so rare like the western. Here is a thread where Dan descirbes the difference: http://www.shelledwarriors.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=3019

and if you haven't seen it already here is a link to a thread I created:
http://www.tortoiseforum.org/western-hermanns-vs-eastern-hermanns-t-219.html

With my animals, my hercegovinensis are smaller than my easterns but are close in size to a few, and are definitely larger than my westerns.
