Many female terrapins are hit by cars traveling to Jekyll Island each year. The team at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center will extract the eggs from females that are killed or they cannot save. These are just some of the hatchlings that were incubated there. Very cool and lucky turtles. Once they are eating well and have gained weight they are released. (Terrible photos from my IPhone)

Ok. So the ink will wear off as they grow?
Yes. It's usually a type of paint, nail polish, crayon. I don't think ink is actually used. Many Turtles and tortoises are marked. Rescued sea turtles large and small are always marked. The biggest think is to not mark in the growth line area and not to use ink or perminent marker. All would eventually wear off but some will be poisonous.

Very cool. How long of a time period so they have to remove the eggs from the mother?
