Grooming a Shepherd

So its summer time! And my German Shepherd is shedding like crazy! I use a grooming rake on him and I literally fill bags of hair . I know diet plays a role in this; I feed him Bill Jack Large Breed. At this point Im probaly gonna take him to the groomers and have him shaved..lol jk. I was reading an article that explains that their are health risk to grooming a northern breeds (Huskies, shepherd ect). They need their coat to protect them from the sun.... Anyone out there have any experience in this field?

No personal experience in a professional realm.....however, we live in the high desert, a neighbor a few houses down the road shaves their Belgian Malinois every year (except the head) and by the time summer is half way through the dog has began to grow the coat back in and by Sept he has alot of his new coat back....?????
