Just switched from live grass to hay feed. Live grass seemed like a great idea but... It smelled, attracted bugs, and my sulcata dug most of it up anywho. He seems to friggin' love the hay, mostly orchard grass, he burrows intricate tunnels and chows down on the stuff. Not to mention it's about 3 bucks for a bail, which has covered 24 square feet twice and I still have more than half left. It's my new best suggestion for substrate, for sullys.

Its good for older ones, but too dry to grow a smooth baby on. Make sure your tortoise has a good clean drinking water source if you are going to use hay as a staple now, and make sure he's drinking regularly. Not a bad idea to soak him once or twice a week at first, just to make sure.

Good advice. He always has drinking/soaking water, and I know he uses it cause I clean poop out if every day. I also keep damp sphagnum moss where he like to burrow.
