    Hello all,

I am so excited to find this page. We own an eight-year-old, 65# Sulcata Tortoise named Peek-a-boo. He is our little love and we can't imagine our lives without him. We took him in from his original owners. They purchased him as a 2 month old hatchling (March of 2011) and within a year he was too big for the little tortoise table they had. They did research and realized how much responsibility one of these guys are and we took him in. We got him in Spring of 2012. He weighed about 1/2 a pound and I could pick him up one handed. He has grown exponentially since. We bought a house in 2016 mainly because we knew he needed outdoor space (we lived in a townhome) and a year round building just for him. We found the perfect place! Our shed is a 1.5 car garage that we tricked out into his new year round home. It has a minisplit for heat/cooling and all the hay and water he could want. He spends any day over 70°F outside in our privacy fenced (and railroad tie reinforced) yard. He is such a character. He learned to climb the 2 steps to get on our back deck so he could ram the door to be let in. I have attached pics for your viewing pleasure. Lol

    Thanks for reading!

    Tricia

Hi Tricia, and welcome to the Forum!

We've heard a few horror stories recently about larger tortoises choking to death on carrots. So, in my opinion, if you want to feed your large tortoise carrots, the best way is to peel them down to nubs and feed either peelings or grated carrots.
