My leopard is in serious trouble. Its Sunday and can't get a hold of vet. Animal hospital is 2 hrs away and they said they don't have a Dr on staff the deals in exotic. Maybe the said just not today.

I walked in to check my Leo out and it looked like he was choking. He was making a weird sound. I tried rubbing his throat, soaked him. I noticed the substrate was wet where he was laying. It didn't look like anything...just wet.

He looks like he is dead...head out, laying down...the all of a sudden comes to, stretches neck out...mouth open. Looks like he's chocking or can't breath. I've done all I know to do.

Temps are good, humidity 50, he's been eating good, soaked daily

Re: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm so sorry to hear. Are you positive he or she hasn't overheated? I know very little. Hopefully someone comes along soon who knows more about leopards.Goodluck

RE: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No. I don't believe. The warm side was never above 90. Basking 95. Cool side 80

There is black around his mouth. Doesn't rub off. Could this be lack of O2. Like our lips turn blue? I'm not even sure he's alive anymore. He would lift his head up every 5 min or so....but haven't seen him move in 15-20 min. Can't see him breathing. Fml

He's gone

If it makes you feel any better when i first got my tortoise he was on that position u described, he was just really thirsty and had some subtrate in his eyes. Also a lot of torts have that black lip thing you described, its stains from the foods they eat... i wish you the best of luck that he is still with you..

Aw, Jason...darn it! I'm so very sorry.

The only way to know what actually happened would be to have a necropsy. It does sound like he had a breathing problem.

(The black around the mouth is from food - grass stains, etc.)

I'm sorry. This is awful.

When you are ready can you share some info? It may help others in the future.

How old was he?
When was the last time you remember seeing him normal?
Last time he ate and what?
His substrate?

This would crush me...again, I'm so sorry.

I'm so, so sorry...I recently lost my cherryhead baby (from a congenital problem) and it is just so hard....you might consider a necropsy if you are up to it; sometimes it helps both you and the vet understand....take care

Thanks everyone for your kind words. I'm done. I give up. I won't have another tortoise die on me.

If you still love tortoises don't give up. Things happen, and you can learn from your mistakes. Find out how this one choked, and then fix that problem. I know how painful it can be to lose a pet, but don't let it keep you from getting another pet if you really want one.
