Hello everyone! I hope I'm posting in the right place. I'm new here and still learning to navigate.

Yesterday, my neighbors gave me two tortoises but had no clue what kind they were or, in my opinion, how to care for them as they are in rough shape.

Before I can give them what they need, I'd love to figure out exactly what they are. I'm speculating on Mexican Box Turtle. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

They look like three toed box turtles to me.

regardless of the species, they ARE box turtles and this is their care...they are semi-aquatic

Oh no!!! I think I guessed wrong might be because I have never seen a colorful 3-toed. I have only seen drab brown 3-toed. So when I see color on a box turtle it's Eastern. I'm thinking no more "guessing"...lol

Three toed box turtle. The hind legs have the three toes - not the front legs. And yes, the beak is very overgrown. TT's are tough turtles, and these have clearly had in-adequate care, but you should be able to nurse them back. A trip to your local vet that deals with reptiles to have the beak shaved down is in order. The eyes look clear so that's a good sign. The overgrown beak occurs when the turtles are housed in "soft" conditions like in an aquarium where there is nothing but "soft" substrate. They need an abrasive surface to keep the beak worn done. Best example would be feeding them on a flat rock where the act of eating will keep the beak filed.

definitely a three toed box turtle.....olive shell little bits of color on legs, three toes in back, looks to be aged too. Good luck with them and welcome to the forum.

Welcome, you will have lots initially to make a nice safe set up. Suggest reading the care sheet and give them a shallow warm water soak use a tooth brush to gently remove any debris. A trip to the vet for beak trim and then good fresh food and water heat and light will all be required. Enjoy and ask questions.
