I am so sorry for your loss! It sounds like your baby had wonderful care.
So,etimes these terrible things happen despite the care we provide.
Im sure your vet can help figure out what happen.

Juls ..... sorry for the loss :( ....either poison ( but usally you will see the effects hours if not days before the animal drops dead unless you happen to have arsenic laying around) What was the temp under the basking light and overall temp in the surronding area? By your description " mouth open" it almost sounds like heat stroke.

Again sorry for the loss .... Hang in there I know there is a tortoise Angel!

I AM SO SORRY. that must be awful.

but my guess is it's something you fed her or she came in contact with outside grazing that she has never consumed before. any animal that eats vegetation, even mammals, have a special gut bacteria that breaks down their food. but bacteria change all the time, so depending on the area they live in and the food they consume daily, their bacteria grows for it. it could be something as simple as a different type of plant maybe.

i found a baby wild bunny once and tried to rehabilitate it, but it could not survive because they eat the bacteria they need from their mothers feces.....and i did not have any of that, lol. so she couldn't go from drinking formula to eating vegetation ):

Man it just sucks to lose a tort. I know you were extremely excited for this new female, and we all were too. I would definitely have a necropsy done and see what the cause of death was. I doubt it was heat related because you would have easily been able to tell if that was the case. It could have been any number of things but really the only way to know is a necropsy.

I'm extremely sorry for ya bud.

We are all here for you.

Thanks everybody for your message . :(
I will bring her to the vet today and will wait for explication.
I will keep you update.
It's so horrible, it was first time i see a dead tortoise.
It was so hard to take her and really a bad vision.

Stay strong Julius. It's hard, but once the vet gives you the reason and you share it here you may be able to save others the same heartbreak. Hope you'll find consolation there.

it's a good sensation to know that you support me.
Thanks everybody for your message.
I will stay strong but it's not easy when i leave her to the vet was the hardest moment.
I feel loose, and don't understand yet why and it's frustrating to don't know.
I bring her to the vet and will have result tomorrow.

Julius,
I am so sorry this has happened. Let us know the results of the necropsy. My thoughts would be an already existing issue internaly. being a wild caught animal can pose some serious infections, worms, parasites if the previous owner has not treated. I am very truly sorry. She was a very beautiful animal, and I know you loved getting her. Again this is a tragedy.

Julius, sure hope you will let us know as soon as you hear something from the vet. Your experience with this tragic event will help us know more about caring for our own tortoises. That is why we are waiting for your reply. Have you been in contact with the person you got your new tortoise from?

i had the response of the vet this afternoon but i will have the document in the end of the week.
In some words (it will be very hard with my english level to be precise)
- sexual organ on which the eggs are formed was very infected and inflamed.
- There were about 40 small eggs of different sizes above.
- The liver was also very infected liver and lymph had.
- that ended in peritonitis infection of the membrane that surrounds the organs.
Stress change just accelerated the process a little, but the poor girl was already condemned
I'm so sad i wich from all my heart she didn't sufferred too much.
Even if she only stay one week at home, i really loved her and will remember very intense of her.
I want to thank again all the member who bring me support message, that's not very happy and easy to live that but the forum community support really help me.

i will call the seller to explain him the autopsy result.

Tell me if my explaination or translation is not good and i will research better words.
It's hard to be precise with technical term.

Oh Julius. That is so sad. Poor thing. Did the vet say whether your other two torts are in danger of becoming infected from being in contact with her?
