Hey guys! I'm new here (obviously lol).. I have never had a tortoise before, however I do have a three year old painted turtle :) I am getting my first hatchling set if Hermann's tortoises in July/August and I'm looking for some ideas for indoor enclosures. I think hubby and I are going to build a tortoise table! I know they should each have their own hiding spot, but how bug should the hiding spot be? What kind of substrate is best?

Hello and Welcome:). Take a look in the enclosure section, you'll find some good ideas. @HermanniChris can help you the best with your questions. Hopefully he will be alerted soon.
Thank you! I missed that thread somehow. I'm mobile at the moment. I have actually already spoken with Chris and have his care sheets printed out and ready to go! I am just excited to get everything set up and am looking for more ideas for how we will build it. :)

A 50 gal rubermaid tub is easier and holds moisture better than a open to tort table a 50 for each one would be best

A table will not work well for babies. They need higher humidity than what you can attain with a wide open top. After you spend tremendous time, money and effort to build a grand table, you will soon realize that an open table with heat lamps cannot maintain the needed humidity.

Instead build two large closed chambers.

Tortoises should not be kept in pairs. Groups work well, but pairs are much too personal. One will be dominant and the other will be intimidated by its presence even if it doesn't do anything outwardly hostile. The situation will be stressful for both. Better to do a group, or just one.

Here's a couple of good care sheets:
