Hi everybody, after reading a lot of posts here I think it's time to introduce myself. I don't own a tortoise yet, but am planning to buy a redfoot in the near future. I have been reading lots of information (read the entire Tortoise Library and this forum of course) and planning on building a perfect enclosure (no pressure ;-) ). I can house the redfoot in my garden in summer, but because of the weather here he has to live indoors for the winter months.

I have also been looking for a trustworthy seller of redfoots in my area, which is not that easy. I've been to a specialised exotic pet shop, and although the young redfoots were kept in quite good conditions (based on my little knowledge), the owner also showed me an adult in the back which was kept in a tiny enclosure with sawdust as a bedding. (He also kept two meerkats in a tiny enclosure with only a piece of wood to entertain them.) So this didn't make me overly enthusiastic... But I keep looking, gives me more time to design and build my enclosure.

Hope to learn a lot here about redfoots, and I will certainly show off my new friend when I bought it!

Welcome! Good luck in your search for a redfoot! Sounds like that adult tort at the pet shop is in need of rescuing!

Thanks everybody for the warm welcome!

@ Grandpa: I guess it's a combination of size (love the huges tortoises but don't have enough space), looks, character (for what I've read), availability and that redfoots don't hibernate. Just kinda fell in love... :)

@ Newzie: maybe it needs rescue but if I buy it I support these practices. They will get a new tortoise and treat it the same way. The owner was not really open for discussion too, too bad....

That's too bad, I've always hated how the majority of pet store owners treat their animals. I've never seen a pet store where I went, "These are really lucky animals". But I guess that's an issue for local lawmakers. It's a shame because they deserve so much better. Good luck with your preparations and tortoise search either way! I'm sure you'll end up with a great tort!

Hi, Amanda! Welcome to our lovely little community. I can't wait to see the tortoise that you adopt!

I'm sorry that you experienced some awful pet store conditions. I once went into an exotic pet store and saw a snake coiled up completely in a Tupperware-like container INSIDE a terrarium, but the crammed container was sealed off. How stupid! He couldn't even move—literally. I wish that those shops would be shot down. I may research some pet store health and animal-management laws and requirements; I wouldn't feel guilty taking it to a legal standpoint. I always feel like I want to adopt those animals and rescue them, but doing so just keeps the store in business and further promotes their habits.

You'll love it here; I guarantee it. We have quite the unique group of people from all corners of the world, and we all have unique pets and personalities! I hope to see more of you on the forums here.

Update: I'm getting a redfoot (second hand, one year old) on sunday! He comes with a glass terrarium, but I still want to build him a bigger closed tortoise table. But, no rush there. His diet also needs some work, he gets lots of tomatoes and fruit at the moment. So excited! Photo's will follow on sunday :)
