Maggie, did you sell that sweet Iroq? If not, of course the drive is also an added benefit :)

Maggie, your only about an hour from me! Small world! So you guys recommend I stop the silver and use betadine or nolvasan instead. I can do that. Just pour it over the wound? What do you use for pain meds? I don't mean to be a pain, but I feel like the knowledge on this forum is invaluable to me and to Walter. I appreciate all input!!

No, use a q-tip gently. Only use the Betadine once then later in the day Nolvasan. I use Metacam for pain. I would also use sterile water to flush first thing in the am. Dip a q-tip to use the Betadine. Use a syringe and gently wash his face w Nolvasan does he have loose shredded skin all over his face? Remember to only use the Betadine once as it kills the white cells needed for regrowth as well as the bacteria. Nolvasan is your main thing as it kills bacteria and does no bad. My sister says the silver is a good healer but not in his eyes or for ingesting. So use a q-tip again.
I would ...
1. flush with warm sterile water
2 Q-tip with with silver then betadine
3.I also would only soak twice a day for about 10-to15minutes Tortoises are going to drink in the beginning and be done. Keep his heat above 80 degrees. Put in a private soaking pool for him. What town are you close to?
Talk to your landlords, and tell them I am 72 years old and basically not interested in anybody than me hahahaha actually that's the truth. Time for Talladaga. When are you thinking about this?

He does have loose shredded skin all over his jaws, not so much on the top. I live in Newberg. I’ve been doing the betadine, but not nolvasan. I’ll pick some up today on my break. He’s been soaking himself in his warm water dish in his cage, strange for him, but a good thing I suppose! I’ll talk to the landlord tonight. I get off work at 230 tomorrow, so maybe in the afternoon tomorrow?

Mix the Nolvasan 20 to 1 with water. Are you supposed to give more Baytril?

Betadine a good disinfectant, but if you use it much more than the very first time (once), it tends to inhibit the growth of new white blood cells. So don't use it anymore. Also, if you use the silver stuff, you won't need to also use the Nolvesan. The silver helps heal the wound, while the Nolvesan is more a cleanser and would just wash it all off. Baytril is an antibiotic.

I'd be happy to enlist your support Maggie. I don't want to inconvenience you, but I"d love some eyes on him to give it to me straight. Should I box him up and bring him to you? Also, is it safe to post my number here for you?

Any chance we could do it today?

Still on for today, yes. You are welcome to meet at my work at 230, if that’s something you’re comfortable with. I don’t get a lot of breaks to check my phone, feel free to text. ( you might be a creeper, but I’m not lol I won’t text the snot out of you unless it’s directions lol)

I have sterile water, some syringes and needles.

Well, I wasn't much help to J-Alba. The hole had a scab over it so we picked it off and nice healthy skin was growing. But I did notice his whole shell was soft and he was mouth breathing. Looked like URI. And I did manage to get him to open his eyes. And he's just cool as hell. But I think J-Alba is pretty knowledgeable, her set up for Walter is perfect. He won't start eating until he can smell.
How is Walter today?

I live in Oregon as well. He will stop eating because of the Baytril. I've had several torts with missing jaws or holes in them. I soak them in carrots (baby food) when they stop eating. If you're not too far away and need some support, mentally or physically I could come and help. I use Betadine and Nolvasan, I wouldn't use that silver on any of my chelonia. I can also bring some pain meds for him too. I have 4 Sulcata and a buncha box turtles.
Tom or Yvonne will probably give you better advice
Wow! Maggie to the rescue! What a gal!

Walter is a 3 month old Sulcata. I've had him about a month. He weighs 60 grams. Day temps 100 basking, 80 ambient, both on thermostat, humidity between 76 and 83%. Night temps at 83-86 on a thermostat. Humidity 85-90%. Diet is fresh grass clippings daily, tortoise pellets (softened with hot water), pansies, geranium, dandelion and the occasional piece of lettuce.
Last week I had family in town from across the country, and Walter was living in a friends room while we built his new enclosure. I watched his temps, but didn't see if he was eating well. Last Wednesday my family left (today is Wed so 7 days ago) and I noticed he had a lack of appetite, but was still eating. I figured he was bored, so I got him new grass and weeds. 3 days ago I noticed he was trying very hard to eat, but he couldn't open his mouth very wide and wouldn't grab onto the food. He wants to eat REALLY bad. He would rub his face with his front leg after trying to open his mouth. I started grinding up grass with some carrot baby food and trying to syringe feed him.. he said no thanks, and trying to make him open his mouth is incredibly difficult. Yesterday it progressed to a large lump on the corner of his jaw where the top and bottom meet. I read alot from this forum, and rubbed it gently with a q-tip, and alot of his skin came off the bottom jaw and a chunk came out off the corner, leaving a hole. Today, we went to the Vet. I was given Baytril 0.025mls IM every 3 days, and colloidal silver to bathe him and for his water dish to replace water. Prognosis is poor per the Vet.
I suppose I am looking for other people who have had this issue, any input about it, happy endings, tips on anything I can do to help him heal.
Thanks, and I hope to hear some personal experiences to give me hope!

Where did you acquire the tortoise from? What was the set up that the tortoise was in before you got him?
