Last year my hubby made me a basking area on top of a 55 gallon tank so we could fill up the entire tank to give Myrtle the entire 55 gallons of swimming water.
Our friend gave us a free 55 gallon tank & stand but the tank had a leak. So my hubby removed the old silicone sealant and replaced it with new that we purchased at a local pet store that specializes in aquariums. We let it set for a 7 days then filled it up with water for a week to watch for leaks. I love fixing up things that others throw away.
He then built a basking area out of plexiglass ,12" by 12" ceramic tile, 90 degree angle brackets, (to connect the plexiglass) & a purchased turtle ramp. He drilled 2 holes in the ceramic tile to connect it to the turtle ramp. There is a small edge around the top of the tank that holds up the plexiglass all around the tank.
I then added my decorations since I love primitive saltbox houses decals to the outside of the plexiglass. They are removable. I love how the T5HO lights light up the decals and the decals give Myrtle privacy.
We covered the other half of the tank with plexiglass to keep Myrtle in and cats out. I then placed my decorations on top like shelf. This set up has worked great for the past year. We purchased the Fluval FX6 filter and love it !!
I hope this helps someone who is looking for a way to set up a simple basking area. Can you find the turtle in the pictures
