Yeah may be, but even when there is sunlight, they are sleeping.. So i think as you said they are very young that's the reason may be.

Hello every1,

Hope you all are dng good..

My baby tortoise sleeps a lot. I want to know that is that normal ? They sleep for almost 18 - 19 hrs. They are very young, may be 2 - 3 months old.

Please suggest on this.

i

It's natural for babies to sleep that long.If they are eating well and if they are active then there's no need to worry.
If they are not doing so then there's something wrong with the routine or habitat.

Yeah, right now i feed them thrice, morning, noon and nite.

If they eat the offerings in entirety each time then perhaps 3 times :p

that happens when you feed cucumber right?....... or any other wet food.....
it is not really ok because your stars a getting cold.... it is winter time..... and during this time of the year we should cut short on the wet food especially on the cold parts of the day.... and if the stars really like that thing like cucumber then give it alternate days, in little quantities and during the hottest part of the day..... and continue the warm water soaks...(make sure it is lukewarm and not cold for the star)....also increase the temperature at night..... i know it is hard to get CHE here in India so what i suggest is getting a room heater if possible or keeping the stars in the room where you and everybody is seated....human bodies act as heat emitters.....so the ambient room temp increases... make sure the stars are tucked in warm clothes for the night...... i use this technique myself because i wasn't able to find a CHE and so i bought a heater for me and my stars..... so we share the room every night in the winters....

Hey shanu,

Thanks a lot.

Yes i have too got a heater for them, and i keep them in my room only.

Actaully they loves cucumber like anything, and don't eat anything else, i am also concerned about it. But yeah they also like leaves of string beans, so will feed that only now. And i keep them in soft blanket at night. And how do u tuck them in woolen clothes?

And do u think i should visit doc ?

@ Diya..... i rub the warm up the woollen clothes in front of the heater or sometimes just by wrapping it on my body to warm the woollens and then i wrap the tortoise from all directions except the area above head....

regarding the doc.... there aren't many docs in india who specialise in reptiles... and on top of that keeping any kind of reptile is banned here in India and not to forget the ban on keeping the star tortoise.... so all i can suggest is that if you trust the Vet and are really sure of his qualifications and knowledge in tortoises then you can proceed but please do so with caution...

Ok. Thanks Shanu.

I think in that i will wait for 2 - 3 days, hope they vl be fine by then, and if not then go to doc.

But bubbles coming out of nose is not a good sign is it?

its good that you bought a heater... now if you are feeding cucumber then i think you should give very little or none.... try feeding dry food..... do the bubbles come out anytime or specifically during feeding time? i'm asking because my tort's nose is filled with bubbles only when i feed cucumber.... so i feed 2-3 times a week only.... rest of the times i feed i feed fenugreek, coriander(although they don't like it that much), hibiscus leaves....
and if you found a vet capable of treating torts then you should see him/her....

i know how ironic it is that the Indian Star Tortoise belongs to India yet there is no vet to treat them.... one more thing i suggest is that go to the zoo... consult the vet there.... they are trained to treat reptiles.... and i think the zoo near you might be housing quite a population of stars.... (zoo in my city does have them).... so tell the vet from the zoo that your friend owns star tortoise.... and it might have caught cold... ask him/her how to treat it like what oral meds he/she suggests.... i know this idea seems a little stupid but if no reptile vet is available then that is the only chance...

Hey thnx Shanu,

Yes i have found a pet, she gave me some powder to sprinkle on cucumber and give them, but mine are not eating it.. :(, Going to zoo is not a bad idea, may go der.

You know what problem is, my torts eats only cucumber, they don't like anything else. don't know what to do. Also you told me that you wrap your torts in woolen clothes, so even i was thinking to do dat, can you send me pics as in how you wrap your torts?

And not all the day, but whenever they wake up, and yes specially while eating, they make some sound like snizzing.

M really very very worried.

hi Diya. same as my baby though. expert commands me to decrease temperature in the enclosure for 1 to 2 degree and however put them under sunlight longer than usual. last step is giving them some medicines but I haven't done that probably I am afraid of the effects(?) well my star baby's still having runny nose :(
anw I am wismi, nice to know ya

@Diya.... i'll post pics in a day or two.... if the bubbles usually come during feeding then you don't have to worry much because it is due to the excess water in the cucumber..they tend to eat rapidly and the water comes out of the nose.... it happened with my torts too... so what i do is feed them cucumber in nice warm sunlight when the temps are at peak for the day.... if sunlight is not coming then what you can do is heat their room/enclosure to nice 33-34 degree celsius... then feed them cucumber..... that way their nose won't get congested.....

Hi Diya, actually bubbles from nose is not always a sign of URI, but it can also mean that they are stressed.
Just to be safe, increase their time in the sun(beware of the predators),keep them soaking(20-30 min).
If they are not eating anything other than cucumber then try chopping it finer and add it to other greens.Babies don't eat greens that easily but you need to be patient .
good luck ;)

Hi Diya,
2-3 days before I too saw bubble coming out of my torts nose. mine tort loves to eat lady finger a lot.. she also eats cucumber. but sometimes she ignores it totally. she regularly eats cucumber in morning and lady finger in night. She eats different things once then next day she ignores. Mine tort is 1-1/2 yr old.
If your tort eats other veggies than cucumber then do tell me what did you do.

Hey hi,

Thnx a lot for the reply, yeah even i think that they needed more sunlight, so now i have start keeping for more duration in sunlight, and they seems to be ok now, bubbles are coming, but not much, they make some sound like sneezing, may be they still have cold and have stopped giving them cucumber, you are right it's very difficult to feed babies other then cucumber, but they also love string beans, so i give them leaves of string beans after removing beans.
