The other day I bought two bags of eco earth (both 8 quarts) and I was wondering if this is enough for an enclosure measuring 48" long and 24" wide. So all together it's about four gallons of it. Is this enough? Or will I need another bag or two? I just don't want to begin putting it in the enclosure to find out there isn't enough.

Its usually best to put at least a few inches of substrate to allow for digging. Do you have a digging species?

I always go pretty deep like 6-8 inches. They seem to like it and it helps with humidity

Apparently another 11 bags.

For a depth of .5' (6"), an enclosure that is 2' x 4' would need 4 cubic feet of substrate. 1 cubic foot is 25.714 dry quarts, so a total of 102.856 dry quarts would be needed. 102.86 - 16 = 86.86 /8 = 10.86

I think.

You could reduce the total amount needed by mounding it, but it won't stay that way for long with a digger.

I have a greek tortoise and I was wondering if I should put a mat underneath the substrate because it digs and lays on the glass. (40 gallon long breeder tank)
