This is the time of year that you will find lots of turtles/tortoises crossing roads, coming out of hibernation, etc.
LEAVE THEM ALONE!
If it's in the road or any immediate danger, move it to safety but in the same area you found it.
They should not be taken home! They should not be mixed with your captive ones! Leave them be, to carry on about their lives where they belong, in the wild!
If it's not a native species then you do need to rescue it and find its owner. It probably got out. Do not mix it with any of your own tortoises or turtles.

To add to what Barb has said:

This is the time of year (spring time) that males are off looking for females and females are about looking for nesting sites.

If you move a turtle out of the road, move it in the same direction it was headed.
