So i walked in reptile store today that had opened up about a three months ago. It's the only strictly reptile place in town. Anyway, it was cool and all, but i was disappointed with the size of the cages. They were small (30 gallons max) and were crammed with animals. The turtles were ALL pyramiding and saw a tank with a full grown greek tortoise (My favorite) a big leopard tortoise(which looked like the pyramids of giza were on its back), and like four or five baby leopards. They had to climb over eachother!! The tanks looked boring and were just lined with pellets, so they couldnt dig. And a humungous Red foot was in a tank that was small, and extremely dry, which i know isn't good. The box turtles were in the bearded dragon pen which i thought they were INSANE!! THE SPIDER CAGES LOOKED BETTER!!! If you open up a petstore, alone a reptile store, shouldn't you give your animals good care. There was some logic obviously missing from that store.....

I think people go in with the idea that their stock will turn over quickly and thus they don't need to build them large, comfortable habitats.

You are correct in thinking if you are going into the business you should take good care of your stock. But maybe they feel that if the weak willed person sees the animals in such poor conditions they will buy faster.

Did you say anything to the clerk about the pyramiding? That stinks. Pyramiding can be corrected right?

No it can't. All you can do is try to ensure that any remaining growth is healthy growth.:(

Some TFO folks in a previous thread on this same subject suggested printing out care sheets and courteously giving them to the store owner/manager, acting as if they have the best of intentions, but just don't know how badly they are treating their animals...

I am he who suggested that. It can only promote awareness and it is the animal we are concerned about. Luckily in my nape of the woods the ReptileSpecialists (.com) know what they are doing.

That's so sad. I got some bad advice when I bought my sully. Luckily I had done my reading beforehand and knew what was really necessary. The guy who sold me my sully actually had 4 sullys himself, but his advice to me was to "soak him once a week" this was after I pointed out that one of the other babies was tucked all the way in his shell, not moving and probably severely dehydrated. Terrible. I had liked this store a lot previous to this, but they disappointed me yet again when they sold me some fish that had a bad case of freshwater ich. So, now I don't go anymore. I am currently looking for a new local store that hopefully takes better care of their animals.
