has anyone ever seen a scute pattern like this one? excuse the poor photo, i took it with my cell phone. i saw this unique little sulcata at the local pet shop and was very intrigued by this pattern. what would cause this?

Extra vertebral scutes like that are almost always caused by to hot a temperature very early in incubation. I've seen quite a few turtles and tortoises with that configuration of vertebral scutes. My female Pancake tortoise has extra vertebral scutes like this sulcata.

I love some of the patterns they come up with. I need to get a picture posted of my youngest Redfoot. His/her name is Zipper, because the scutes look like teeth on a zipper. It's also why I immediately fell for a little sulcata that Yvonne had gotten in...and she was sweet enough to let me have Tilman...once more Yvonne Thank you thank you!!:D
