I have a sulcata 3and a half years who has tried to mount my friends tortoise who is considerably larger. I was just wondering if there is any posibility of fertility with an female that is 5 and a male thats 3 and a half. And I was wondering if it is smart to let them mate at this age. I take him there to roam and eat not necesarilly to mate but i would love for the female to lay eggs. Thanx in advance

Hi Levi:

Its not a mating thing, its a dominance thing. I doubt at those sizes either one of the tortoises is big enough to sex yet. The smaller tortoise is trying to show dominance over the larger tortoise. When they get to be about 25 or 30 pounds, then the fertility issue comes into play. I got my Dudley (125lbs) when he weighed 35lbs. He had already fertilized a couple clutches of eggs at that time...his second year to do so. I think he was about 9 or 10 years old at that size.
