Hi everyone,
just got my 1st Indian Star Tortoise today.

I am using fertilized soil and sphagnum moss as substrates.

I know that people recommended non-fertilized soil. However, it is not available where I live.

Does any one ever use fertilized soil? is it safe?

any recommended substrate for indian star? it is about 3.5 inches long (10cm)

thank you everyone~

What is the fertilzer? Chemical or organic?

Looks like it has the white perlite or vermiculite. Not good - torts are often attracted to it and can eat and get compacted.

I wouldn't use that. You could use cypress mulch, orchid bark, coco coir, plain soil (with no additives of any kind) or a combination of any of these.

Where are you? Maybe somebody near you can make a recommendation.

There are a few Star keepers here on the forum who use hay as substrate, and some use indoor/outdoor carpet. Take a look through the Star section here and look at the pictures. You'll get some ideas that will be better than that soil you have in the picture. I believe even soil from outside, if its clean would be better.
