Greetings!

With the season quickly coming to a start we are looking to hire one Reptile Technician (Seasonal Conservation Aide) for Nevada Department of Wildlife, hopefully by mid-April.

Here is the information on the Seasonal Conservation Aid recruitments:

We have new open competitive recruitments that are currently open for Seasonal Conservation Aid I, II, and III positions. There is not a close date for these recruitments, so it is recommended that individuals apply as soon as possible. You can use the following links that are shown below for direct access to the job announcements. Feel free to spread the word of the open competitive recruitments (note, it’s a pool of applicants for a variety of seasonal positions so the job descriptions are intentionally vague).

The technician will assist with a variety of herpetofaunal surveys including: intensive night driving (road-riding) surveys across established road transects in the Mojave and Great Basin deserts, radio-telemetry surveys for transmittered reptiles (e.g., desert tortoise, Gila monster, rattlesnake spp., western pond turtles), visual encounter and trapping surveys for western pond turtle, herp reconnaissance surveys throughout the state of Nevada, data entry and QAQC, and potentially inter/intra-division/agency surveys (as needed). Applicants should be comfortable working around venomous reptiles; tasks will include assisting in the capture (via tongs and buckets) and processing of reptiles and tracking them using hand held telemetry. Surveys involve extensive walking through uneven, unstable, and rocky terrain. Experience identifying Nevada’s herpetofauna is preferred. This position will be based out of Las Vegas, but field work may occur statewide. This technician should be based near Las Vegas as housing is likely not provided. This position begins late April or early May.

Qualifications

Ideally the applicants should have recently earned or be working towards a four-year degree from an accredited college or university (biology, wildlife management, ecology, or related field). They should be able to work independently for long hours in unfavorable weather conditions (e.g., heat) and must act safely under conditions working with venomous reptiles in remote field settings. Field experience with reptiles is preferred but not required. Applicants must be 18 years or older and have a valid driver’s license.

Again, feel free to send this to anyone you might think would be interested and contact me if you have any questions.

Cheers,

Jason L. Jones/Herpetologist/Wildlife Diversity Division
