To the best if my memory...About 3 years ago, I purchased three or four cactus pads from a local Hispanic grocery. There are many in my area.
Two of them I chopped up for my Redfoot tortoises. One I jammed into a large (at the time) flower pot.
Over time that single pad became a large bush/tree. It grew so quickly that I was able to pick and feed the newest and softest pads every day and still had pads to spare.
About 2 weeks ago, the cactus plant had grown so GINORMOUS that it cracked that flower pot in half and fell over.
I took a machete to it to get it back to a manageable size. And ended up with what is at least 100 pounds of clippings. Each of them ready to throw down roots and become a new plant!
I gathered them into a city garbage bin. After posting cactus for free on OFFER UP and Craigslist.
Nobody wants any.
So 3 years from now, if anyone sees giant cactus down at the landfill.....
My back is aching. But I now have a cactus I can manage. It looks like a tree stump and weighs about 75 pounds.
All from ONE cactus pad.
