Most every time I clean my turtle tanks I do it because of algae. I heard you can add a little salt and it will kill off the algae and not harm the turtle. Only animals that breathe with gills can be harmed. Is this true? If so it would be a lifesaver.

Salt won't kill it. Algae grows in every aquatic environment from full salt water to brackish to fresh.

Your best bet is to starve it of nutrients and light. Close the window shade in that room for most of the middle of the day and perform large, frequent water changes. Also, more filtration and large amounts of fresh, activated carbon with remove the nutrients algae needs to flourish. If you clean the mechanical portion of your filter early and often it will remove the detritus that will soon become algae food.
