Hi all,
I was just approved by my local reptile shelter to adopt a redfoot and I'm picking him/her up on monday. Im almost done with my enclosure for him/her but had a few plant questions. My biggest concern is the Kimberly queen fern i have in the enclosure. I know some ferns are toxic but others like boston fern are ok. I couldn't find a definite answer on the Kimberly queen and would like some expert advice.

Also i have some burgundy bunny fountain grass, but i figured that would probably be fines since it is basically just a grass plant.

Greetings..

I didnt see much on this fern, but TheTortoiseTable basically says if you don’t KNOW it’s safe, then don’t feed.

  • There are over 20,000 species of ferns which are grouped into several different families.
  • Although not all ferns are toxic some ferns do contain carcinogens. Many also contain thiaminase, an enzyme that depletes the vitamin B complex in the body. Because many ferns are difficult for the non-specialist to ID, we advise people to avoid feeding ferns to their tortoise unless they can positively identify the species and know that it is safe.
Boston Fern is fine....but i think id just err on the side of caution with the Kimberley.

Fountain Grass - Many Pennisetum occur in the natural habitats of the Sulcata and Leopard tortoises and all are considered safe to feed, but they do have a reputation for accumulating oxalates and soaking up nitrates from the soil, so try to grow on a low-nitrogen compost.
