I read something about coiled lamps being bad for tortoises eyes could someone enlighten me? What is the best type of UV lamp to get? I have a long cylinder UV bulb right now but need to replace soon!

Right now the two best choices are you long tube florescent or mercury vapor bulbs. There are some new external ballasted models hitting the market right now too that look promising.
There is no easy answer to this. Everyone must choose what will work best in their own situation. There is such a wide variety of species and millions of ways to keep them. Every enclosure is truly a custom job.
Be aware that our own DeadHeadVet has been testing various models and found only one particular brand (I can't remember which) that lasts any longer than three months with decent UV output. PM him for more info.
