Hi everyone. I know there are countless threads about this but I just need a bit of help identifying these critters. They look kind of like springtails to me but I want to be sure. They are black in color. I have a ton of pics of them that I will attach. Their population is growing and I can't seem to manage to be rid of them. I have found the best thing to manage them is to spray down the enclosure with a mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide. I do this while the tortoise is in a different enclosure. It seems to kill the ones that come into direct contact although some hop away. They seem to be able to hop but none fly. I have been doing the hydrogen peroxide for a few months and it doesn't seem to do anything to the tort which is good. I just want a definitive id on these bugs from someone more experienced than I am to make sure they aren't mites or anything to be concerned of. Thanks so much!IMG_20190822_061602.jpg

Ah ok i see them now. Yes, looks like springtail, pretty beneficial to have around. Dont harm pets nor humans and eat fungis and mold. People use them to "seed" terrariums and keep them clean and healthy.

Consider adding pillbugs, earthworms, or earwigs to the enclosure to manage the population of springtails and similar nuisances.

Okay, the earwigs aren't something you'd actually add to the enclosure, but if they wind up in there, let them stay. They won't harm you or your tortoise, but they're actually quite good for clean-up.

I know its an old post. I had the same type bug so I thought I might tell my success story.
I used Dawn dish soap and water in a sprayer. Use 1-2% soap, remainder water.
Remove Water, food dish and tort.
Spray enclosure, Substrate bedding & Hide House. Spray your Plant Leaves above and under. Lift stones, plants if you have any and spray under.
Let DRY then return water, food & tort.
Dawn dish soap is used to clean oil spill animals and cat/dog for flea control.
The reason it works is the soap drys out the bugs outer layer which kills it along with the eggs. You may have to apply a couple times to get all of them.
