I am looking to buy a baby tortoise. My son's pet guinea pig died, and he has taken it hard, really hard. He loved his guinea pig so much. He said to me after she past "mom, my heart hurts. I lost my child, my daughter." My son has very high functioning autism, and his guinea pig was the high light of his day. He was so sweet, he would read to it, talk to it.

The reason i am interested in a tortoise is because he would make a great tortoise daddy and they will live for a long time, much longer then a guinea pig. The sad thing is we have a dog who is 18 years old and is very much slowing down.

I am thinking next spring would be a great time to buy one.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum!
What species are you looking into? Are you aware that most of them, even the small ones, need a minimum enclosure size of at least 8x4 feet?

When it out grows the enclosure that we have now we'll put him in the small spare room that is too small for an office but will be great for a tortoise room, or my son has a loft bed with the perfect space underneath it. We are going to wait till spring so he and i can learn more about caring for one. We are thinking about a greek, russian, or hermin.

Thanks for replying

Please keep in mind that the tortoise cannot roam the floor, if that’s what you mean. It’ll need an 8x4 foot table, or outdoor enclosure.

Please give these a read, they work for most testudos(those three) :)

sorry no not roaming the floor. There will be an enclosure for the tortoise on an area a bit larger then the size of a twin mattress, and a weather permitting enclosure outside for hot days.

I just want to say hello and welcome. Hope it all works out well for you and your son. Good luck choosing. All three are great tortoises.
