Is that another sub species of the leopard? Of just similar to sudan sulcata which grows to much bigger size.
How big can this somalica achieve?

Thanks

Since the subspecies status for the species seems debatable, I feel more comfortable describing this more along the lines of a region/locale-specific variation. I do not know the maximum size for this type, but they seem heftier than even the especially large South African animals. I think these would be very interesting to work with.

Wow, they're huge. I wonder why the guy in the last pic is stacking them up like that?

I see. This thing should be wonderful to care for. Thanks for the input, Baoh.

I love that last picture. The guy is wearing a down jacket and it's foggy.

Up until about a year ago, adults could be ordered from Somalia (up to 65-70cm) from Worldwide Fauna.

This link from another similar thread may be an actual way to 'get some'.

I believe those are in France. Unfortunately USDA ban on leopard, and sulcata will no allow importation of these species into the US. I may be wrong in the literature that is applicable to the ban. Would be awesome to have some of these guys though.

They get big in southern Africa as well.

This one is in Karoo National Park. Those larger rocks are 'about' football size, that would be the American lemon shaped football, not what we Americans call a soccer ball.

And here are few others, with other things for size reference, also in Karoo National Park.

Lots of quality food and your leopard will grow big too.

look at the paper attached to post #4 on

to see what I mean.

mmmmm karoo. Such great specimens of tortoises in those regions. I see many exporters with availability of SA leos in the 24-26" range for a disgustingly low price. Too bad we cant get them in. Also that is a wonderful article BTW.

This just makes me so sad (the fact that you sold Aladar).

What ban? Is this something to do with ticks? When/why did this happen?
