I just set up and received my tortoise a week ago. This morning I believe there were mold spores on the top of her substrate :( it's a 50/50 mix of peet moss and top soil.

Does this happen frequently? Am I better off with a different substrate? Should I remove all 4-6 inches of substrate or just the top layers?

I need suggestions, please help!

If it is mold then it needs to be cleaned out. I have coconut fiber and moss mix and i never have a issue.

Yep, I have had this issue with top soil but I think it was a fungus.... anyway stir it up frequently & increase air circulation should help. I added a little fan to my enclosed chamber & it helped a bit.

Top soil stays wet for A LONG time. Try ECO Earth Cocunut fibers... great for all kinds of reptiles and edible if they pick up a little.

Res infections come from wet & cold. Keep temps up and all will be well.

Thank you both. Temps are in the 80's and low 90's in the basking area. She LOVES her tercacotta hide with speghnam moss in afternoon and night. I have a CHE over that so it stays warm :)
