My Tortoise Brain Gorger bangs against the guy's terrarium. I wish that (s)he wouldn't. I placed pieces of paper to deter the little guy but (s)he doesn't care, still does it.

Also would like to sex the guy. Here are some pictures:

Oh, that second picture is so sad. He's standing on his head?

My guess on the sex is male. and wow, one year makes a big difference.

I had placed him like that only for a good picture to sex him with. He's a tough little guy anyways, he didn't mind it for only a second.

My guess is male also.

I don't know about the Greeks species, however the species that I DO know about all have to dig in a corner for a half hour or so every night to get things arranged to their liking prior to going to sleep. Is that what your tortoise is doing?

Looks like a male to me--HUGE tail.

One big problem I see with your set-up that may be causing the problems is that it's WAY too small for an adult tort. They're very active, and need as much room as you can give them.

As well, I've found that, even with paper up on the outside, the glass still reflects the inside of the tank due to the light. He may be "ramming" his reflection, or trying to get to the space he sees reflected in the glass.

Just a couple ideas.

Although he does dig, that is not what he was doing last night. It seems like once a month he does that so it's not too big of a deal.

My terrarium is quite big for him right now, the terrarium is about 50 times bigger than him. I know in the future I will have to get a bigger one but right now it's huge for him.

i would maybe try some different substrate. some grass, some soil or mulch.
try feeding him to distract him when he does this?

I assume I would grab this from a home improvement store, is there any I should avoid? Any recommendations?

It's your decision what to do, but I still believe it's at least worth a try to see if a larger enclosure solves the problem. A Christmas tree storage tub by Iris would give you another 1.5 sq ft of space (if I'm right in assuming your enclosure is a 40 gallon breeder? about 4.5 sq ft) and will give you opaque walls, thereby knocking out two potential causes (not enough space and see-through/reflective walls) for only $25-30. You can find one of these tubs at Walmart, Fred Meyer, and similar stores.

Really cheap organic top soil with no additives works perfect. Or, if you can find it, plain cypress mulch (again, no additives) is also a good substrate. You should be able to find either at a home improvement store.

I use coconut coir as my substrate. I keep it moist by pouring water over it when it dries out. I got it from a garden supply store.
