Here is my second to largest female who is a year younger than my largest. This is the "spotless" one in the original post of the thread that lacks the typical double dot pattern of PP. But she is undoubtedly pure. She's catching up quickly to my larger females. This is my "yellow" male. His skin is really striking in person.....when clean lol. ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1503456218.423855.jpgImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1503456229.423352.jpgImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1503456240.961121.jpgImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1503456259.163293.jpg

Now just a few notes. This year I did not "baby" them as I did in their first two years to see how well they would grow despite the lack of frequent soaks, frequent grocery green treats, etc. They definitely don't grow at the same rate as when they get special treatment but seem to go through certain periods where the growth kicks in then slows down again. But they have still grown and I plan on supplementing them more in the near future to see how much it affects their future growth.

All in all they are happy healthy tortoises enjoying the south Louisiana lifestyle. ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1503456662.654055.jpg

Hopefully these other young PP I'm raising up turn out female because I'm in desperate need of some ! They are beautiful. Is the very dark a PP trait? I will be hoping for female on the unknowns for you. Will you sell some of the males?

PP do tend to be darker overall compared to babcocki. I've yet to see a pure PP adult that was blonde vs medium-dark.

I'll likely have to part with a male or two relatively soon. Which will be super difficult

Byron, I had chimed in on this thread about a year ago when I just joined the forum, but had never read it in it's entirety until now. Man, it's great. You've done a magnificent job of chronicling your group's growth over the years. I particularly enjoyed watching the development of the yellow, knobby, mis-scuted, "ugly duckling" into a handsome young lad. I also, as I binge-read, felt the pain of you discovering male after male, after male. That's a lot of tortoise junk you have to contend with at soak time! Are they all living in the same pen, ans are you seeing any fighting? As for your new Rodriguez youngsters, why not just trim the tails down before they grow out? Worth a shot, no?:D
Keep it up, and many thanks for the great thread.

Thanks for the comments Dave. And you’re right, it’s a lot of males lol. Next year may be the year where I have to part with one or two. But (knock on wood) they get along remarkably well.

I’m really hoping to ultimately have a 3m:7F. And it turns out one of my young “males” may in fact be female. It’s the ultra smooth one that has always had flared anal scutes but over the last 2-3 months I’ve noticed the anal scutes are starting to lose their flare rather than increasing with flare. And I’ve never gotten flashed so I’m back to 50/50 on whether it ultimately turns out male.

That would help out my ratio tremendously if it turns out female.

For my Rodriguez babies, they are to perfect to tamper with [emoji12] so I’ll take my chances .

Here is the plastron shot of my smooth mystery one that is looking more female by the day

Yeah I'm going with female too. Small tail, small anal scutes that are looking more up-side-down U shaped than 1950's mustache.

Updated pictures of what appears to be young pp females from Rodriguez Chelonians. Here’s to hoping! IMG_6943.jpgIMG_6944.jpgIMG_6945.jpgIMG_6950.jpg

And the others plastron

This next one is the 3rd baby from Rodriguez Chelonians that went through a mysterious pause in growth to the point to where I feared it would die. But after months of isolation and extra TLC she is back kicking with new growth which has me super excited. What a trooper
