My turtle had an incident a very very long time ago, when she got her eye ripped. Her other eye was fine. It's been almost 2 years since the incident. Now, her good eye is getting swollen. I don't know what to do! Will someone please help me?

Hi Sonja:

The swollen eye might not be related to the other eye problem. Usually swollen eyes happen in box turtles when they don't eat for a while. It is usually associated with vitamin A deficiency.

Has anything changed in the way you take care of your turtle? Have you actually seen her eat?

Try soaking the turtle in a jar of Gerber strained carrots mixed with a bit of warm water. Soak every day for 30 minutes for at least 3 days and you should start to see an improvement.

Can you post a pic and give a run down of the enclosure and lighting, etc. are you using a coil light bulb? If you are get rid of it ASAP. They have been known to cause eye problems. In other reptiles, as well as tortoises.
