Hi there,

My spur thigh is a rescue tortoise and we don't know much about him. He's apparently fully grown and is definitely a male. He's been a bit lethargic lately due to cooler weather but now the suns out he's running around eating everything in sight. I just wanted to know what is a suitable weight for a fully grown male spur thigh? I want to keep track of his weight to make sure he's eating enough.
Thanks Lucy.

Size and weight can vary quite a bit among the different varieties, and even among the same variety of Greek depending on their environment, diet, health, and genetics.

Posting some pictures of Albus will let the experts here identify his species in order to give you some better answers.

Yes if you can take pics of the carapace looking straight down at it as well as pics looking straight down at the plastron will at least give us an idea of what he is.

There are two estimators for healthy weights, the Jackson Ratio and the Donoghue Formula. This information might help.

Donoghue Formula discussed here:
http://www.tortoiseforum.org/thread-55166.html#axzz29mzfIIM9 - If you use the calculation for Body Mass Index (Madkins007 post on this thread) it can give you a more meaningful result from your tortoises SCL and weight.

Jackson Ratio - strictly for a couple species of Testudo - probably not wise to use this for your sulcata.

Oh, and try using tinypic.com for photos, they'll provide you a link to copy and paste right into the thread. It's free, easy, and works well.

Thank you Redstriker. I have had a go at tinypic.com. Hopefully someone might be able to help be determine what sort of tortoise he is. I'm getting very confused with all the subspecies.

Looks like a Testudo, here's a thread bump for all those Testudo people to give you a specific epithet for your tortoise.

Glad Tinypic.com worked for you!

I've been told he might be an Ibera.

During my first month of hibernation Albus has dropped in weight. He has gone from 1450g to 1415g. Should I take him out of hibernation? Please help. I haven't hibernated a tortoise before.

Welcome - and what a beautiful tortoise!
You might try private messaging GBTortoises for some classification expertise. :)
I am not sure how much weight is acceptable weight loss during hibernation since mine don't hibernate. Do you normally keep yours indoors or outdoors? Where are you hibernating it?

He normally lives outdoors. We are trying fridge hibernation as we don't have any indoor space for him to be over wintered.
