I was watching over my tortoise in my backyard yesterday, when I saw him scratching his arm against his shell I thought nothing of it until he repeatedly kept doing so. The grass also gives me the tingles sometimes but he's been the backyard countless times and I've never seen him do that, and the skin worries me. I went to investigate and he had a top layer of skin that was was red and dry and also shiny. I took him to a tub to wash warm water over it. He stopped itching and came in. I didn't want to use soap , I thought that would make it worse .
Prior to coming in he pooped and it was stringy He hasn't eaten anything stringy in the last couple of days to my knowledge, just hibiscus. I thought it was normal so I carried on with the day. Next morning (today) his urine is a dark red brown. We give him water every day and he didn't eat much of the grass in the backyard. His appetite hasn't changed much, he eats the food we give him. This is my adult tortoise.
I will provide pictures of my tortoise skin with a reply or edit.
