Today my son Nathan noticed that Fernando was making noises when he was breathing. Yep, bubbles from his nose. I do have Baytril that Walter (his previous owner) had given to me when he had taken Fernando to see Dr. Greek for his last infection. The date prescribed is 2-2-10 and there's no expiration date for the Baytril. I gave him a dose anyway because of the bubbles coming from his nose. Shouldn't there be an expiration date for this kind of medicine and if so what would it be? That's my first question. My second question is does anyone have any pictures of the proper way to hold his head when I give him the dosage? I kind of know how and I think that I did it right, but I don't want to hurt him when I'm doing it. He actually took the medicine quite well this morning so I think I'm doing it right just want to make sure. Any other suggestions to clear this up would be appreciated. I did bring in the tub enclosure so that I can start putting him under some heat. Thanks. :) One more question.....Are Jasmine plants o.k. plants to have around Desert Tortoises?

Hi Candy:

Baytril is usually administered by IM injection. However, it is also ok to give it orally. Is that how you did it...orally?

I'm a little surprised that you would have any medicine left over. It is always best to administer it for the length of time the vet said to.

The box my Baytril box came in HAS an expiration date stamped on it. So if you have a bottle of Baytril that isn't in a box, that's why you don't see the expiration date.

If you have individual doses of baytril, already mixed up in the syringes, then Walter didn't use it like he was supposed to.

About the bubbly nose:

I usually don't react right off the bat. I give the tortoise a chance to get over it by himself. If possible, make him warmer, but I'm thinking he's outside, and its pretty warm during the day...so maybe you can just bring him in at night and put a red/black light over him to keep him a bit warmer than normal night temps.

If the discharge changes colors or gets thick, or if the tortoise stops eating, that's when I start the antibiotic.

Usually I don't have to resort to the antibiotic. They usually get over it on their own.

Good luck with him and please keep us updated.

Thank you Yvonne for your answer. Yes it is a oral medication. The box only says when he bought it and the bottle has nothing on it. I set up an enclosure that I had for Jawbreaker in the house. I've got to admit that I'm surprised that he started having bubbles out of his nose. I had to clean his face that's how much he had this morning. It is clear but somewhat sticky. I did soak him because it's been a while since he's done that and I didn't want him to become dehydrated. He's sleeping very comfortably right now under a bit of heat so I will keep you updated on him. He is eating fine so that makes me feel better. :)

How is Fernando doing now Candy? I take it your giving him the pills? It does have an experation date. If he still has a runny nose, than I would go and get some new Baytril pills and ask them to put the experation date on the container. No right or wrong way really on ways of getting a tortoises mouth open to administer medication, but easiest to do when holding the sides of the head.
