I am looking for someone with a good knowledge of sexing turtles to help determine what sex these are. I have tried to figure it out but haven't had much luck. Turtles #1 and #2 have much taller shells and weigh more than #3 and #4, so I was assuming they were females. I have looked at their tails also but am still very confused in telling the difference there. They are all about 12" SCL other than #3 which is about 11" SCL.

I can't see enough of the tails to offer a good guess, and I can't see #2's tail at all. I was going to guess male on 1,3 and 4.

I think our resident sexing expert, EgyptianDan, must be out of town, because he hasn't been on in a couple days. I'll send him a PM so he can come take a look when he gets on the forum next time.

Male hands-down. The male's clocea opening on fly rivers goes past the marginal scutes while females don't.

I thought the females were bigger. But I'm no expert on Pig-nosed turtles.

On soft-shell type turtles you really can't go by the cloacal opening. You have to go by the tail. Is it longer/bigger or shorter/smaller. Because I'm not an expert, I would have to see them all next to each other to compare, but you can do that. Just from the pictures, I still say 1,3 and 4 look male.

I am going to pull them each out today and take profile shots that I'll post also. I think (and am hoping) that #1 and #2 are female, but I think my pictures need to be all the same angles to really show that they are different in the pics.

Yes...that's a pretty good description on that web site. I didn't know about the female's carapace being more domed. The person who can give you the straight scoop is Egyptian Dan, but he hasn't been on for the past few days. Hopefully he'll be back and help you soon!

For Asian species the extension of the clocea is usually the best way to sex them. Even if the female's clocea is on the marginal scutes, the males' clocea extension is way more obvious.

Hard to tell from those pics...A cpl. of them are getting pretty beat up though. That's to many housed together in a tank.

I believe Fly River comes from Australia, not Asia.

They're also native to Irian Jaya and Papua New Guinea, in Indonesia. I just prefer to call them Asian species.

They are all between 11-12" SCL and they are split up into different tanks now (750 gallon and two 240 gallon tanks). I pulled them out earlier and took some pics, turtle #2 flashed when I had him out so I know he's a male now. Turtle #1 still looks like a female to me though, I'll post some pics tonight comparing them.

Here is the turtle in question, #1. I have come to the conclusion that the other three are male, although #1 is the heaviest at 10lb 2oz, and has the shortest tail out of the bunch by far. Here are some pics of #1 compared to the known male #4.

I think you're right. #1 has a little higher domed plastron and shorter more refined tail, while #4 is slightly flatter with a longer more sturdy tail.

Sorry to get in on this so late, :D but I agree with #1 being a female and #2,3,and 4 being males. They can be hard to sex.
