Sea Turtle Emergency Response Volunteer
Available Currently recruiting for weekday and weekend openings
Time commitment 6 shifts (8:00am to 6:00pm) between November 15, 2015 and January 1, 2016. Preference will be given to candidate who will be able to commit to the same day each week.
Department Description: The Marine Animal Rescue Team primarily rehabilitates sick or injured endangered sea turtles, and responds to dolphins, whales, porpoises, and seals in the field. Established in 1968, the Marine Animal Rescue Team has responded to thousands of calls of stranded, injured and diseased marine animals throughout the New England coastal region.
Emergency Response Volunteers are needed from mid-November through the end of the year to aid in the Marine Animal Rescue Team’s response to the busy New England sea turtle season. During this period, the team will intake and provide critical care for anywhere from 100-700 cold-stunned seas turtles.
Responsibilities: A significant amount of cleaning is required in order to maintain the hospital environment. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to; preparing animal diets, feeding, restraining animals for treatments and injections, maintaining records including water quality, daily food intake, and swim charts.
Qualifications: Previous animal handling, medical, or emergency response experience is preferred. Must be in good physical condition and able to lift 50 pounds. Must be able to perform significant cleaning tasks daily. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Must be at least 18 years of age.
Onboarding & Service Requirements: Due to the unique nature of this particular volunteer position, successful candidates will be asked to complete the following steps:
1. Complete our 2015 Turtle Season Volunteer Application
2. Successfully pass a screening interview with the Office of Volunteer Programs & Internships
3. Attend a 2 hour onsite orientation with the Rescue & Rehabilitation team
4. Complete two full day (8:00am to 6:00pm) training sessions
5. Commit to at least 3 full volunteer shifts (8:00am to 6:00pm) between November 15, 2015 and January 1, 2016.
*Note: you must have your own transportation because this program is based at our offsite Animal Care Center in Quincy, MA.
