Hi I have recently rescued a 9 year old Horsfield tortoise. I have done quite a bit of research on the Internet an pretty confident I am giving this little fella a better life now.

His background that I know of is he was a pet in a nursery when I reckon he was well looked after then sold to a lady who had no knowledge of tortoises an then sold to me when she got bored after only owning him for 5 months.

I have named him Arnie. He is very tame an loves to chase my dog!! He is not scared of her at all. ( they are never left unattended together).

He is currently living in a vivarium but we are having a tortoise table made for him which we should have in a couple weeks :) he has a basking point at around 92°F and a UVB tube covering most of the vivarium both lights are on timer from 8 am - about 8.30pm.

Where he came from he only had a small heat mat which only reached about 65°F and she said she didn't use his UV light as the room he was in was bright enough!!! I was shocked and soo glad to be taking him to a better home!

It took him about a week to start eating but he is now eating well :) i think he may be used to the lower temp an he likes to bury himself in the cool sand quite often.

I'm looking forward to the summer so he can play outside in his outdoor enclosure :)

I have attached a couple of pictures of him :)

His enclosure is not the best at the minute, hence why I am having a tortoise table made but I will be sure to post pics when it's ready :)

I have this pic but this was taken before I fitted his UVB tube and a close up of him hiding under a plant through the glass.

Oh ok. I read somewhere as long as it was children's play sand it was ok.

Should I mix it with soil?

He doesn't seem grumpy really just likes to mess the place up by moving everything instead of walking around it.

He is very tame and loves to fall asleep sitting on my shoulder or near my neck haha

Picture from tonight all snuggled up haha

Welcome and nice save. Please read that care sheet and follow it to a T. It was written by a member here who has been breeding them for a very long time all with top results so you can trust the info.

That sand has to go, no sand is good sand.

Also.... What size tortoise table are you building? Please note that your guy will stay small but they are 'roamers' and 'diggers'. The minimum size table recommend your your guy is 4'x8' (the size of a sheet of plywood) with sub-straight at least 5" deep.
