I visited the natural range of the Hermann's tortoise recently and was inspired to create a new, more naturalistic enclosure for my tortoise. Here are some pictures of wild tortoise habitat:

After clearing a section of land, I installed a 5' x 10' dog kennel from Lowe's. I put plastic chicken wire along the bottom to help stabilize the soil and prevent the tortoise from digging out.

My soil layering recipe is inspired by the book Naturalistic Keeping and Breeding of Hermann's Tortoises. First layer is mulch, bark, and rocks. On top of that is a layer of coco coir and orchid bark mixed with coral sand.

Our tropical climate makes it difficult to grow or source many Mediterranean plants aside from rosemary, lavendar, etc.

Plants planted. Added rocks, sticks, and unused ceramic floor tiles to break up the line of sight. The pots on the sides have plants that are delicate or that have leaves that are not tortoise safe.

Final touch is a layer of coral gravel to replicate the stony Mediterranean soil.

Later, I added plastic chicken wire to the top and sides of the kennel to keep birds and rats out. Pretty happy with how it turned out, and so is the tortoise!

Really, didn't know that. Which ones are not allowed?

I guess none are truly prohibited, but only zoos or researchers may have:

FAMILY Testudinidae
  • Asterochelys radiata tortoise, radiated
  • Asterochelys yniphora tortoise, angulated
  • Chelonoidis elephantopus tortoise, Galapagos
  • Gopherus (Xerobates) agassizi tortoise, desert
  • Gopherus flavomarginatus tortoise, Bolson
  • Gopherus polyphemus tortoise, gopher
  • Indotestudo (all species in tortoise genus)
  • Kinixys belliana tortoise, Bell's hinged
  • Kinixys erosa tortoise, Schweigger's hinge-back
  • Kinixys homeana tortoise, Homer's hinged
  • Malacochersus tornieri tortoise, pancake
  • Manouria (all species in genus) tortoise
  • Psammobates geometricus tortoise, cape geometric
  • Pyxis arachnoides tortoise, spider
Too bad, I would love to have a radiated.

This is a list of "conditionally approved" animals which can usually be brought in. But it is confusing since it includes some species that are very rare in captivity or extinct.

FAMILY Testudinidae
  • Asterochelys (all species in tortoise genus except A. radiata and A. yniphora)
  • Chelonoidis (all species in tortoise, Galapagos genus except C. elephantopus)
  • Chersina angulata tortoise, bow-sprit
  • Geochelone (all species in genus) tortoise
  • Gopherus (Xerobates) (all tortoise, gopher species in genus except G. agassizi, G. flavomarginatus, and G. polyphemus)
  • Homopus areolatus tortoise, parrot-beaked
  • Homopus boulengeri tortoise, donner-weer
  • Homopus femoralis tortoise, karroo
  • Homopus signatus tortoise, speckled
  • Megalochelys (all species in tortoise genus)
  • Psammobates oculifer tortoise, serrated geometric
  • Psammobates tentorius tortoise, knobby geometric
  • Pyxis (Acinixys) planicauda tortoise, flat-back spider
  • Testudo (all species in genus) tortoise, European
