Charlie hasn't ever finished a burrow I've started. He is picky where he wants his burrow. He would never start one out in the middle like that.

That's natural behavior. They usually like doing it against a barrier. Charlie's first burrow was under a bush. We built a little open house to encourage him to dig where we wanted him to. Maybe you could put up a small barrier around two sides of it. It makes them feel more secure, I think.
