Hello! My name is Monica and I'm sooooo new to this whole tortoise thing, but so far I'm really enjoying it. My family and I purchased a red foot, Hector, from the pet store last week. After reading some posts on here, I'm wishing I went with a breeder but he's really cool and has his first vet appt on this week just to make sure all is well. We recently had a russian, Claire, and she died last week. She was diagnosed with a herpes virus. The next day she died and it was very traumatic for my step-son therefore we went and got Hector who seems to be a pretty awesome little guy. Anyway.... I hope to learn many many things from this forum!

:D

Hi Monica:

May I ask where you are located?

Welcome to the forum!!

Please be sure to NOT use any of Claire's stuff for Hector unless you can sterilize it. I'm not sure how contagious the herpes virii are, but you don't want to take any chances.

I live here in Indianapolis, IN.

We got rid of almost everything of Claire's, and for the rest, the vet taught us how to properly sterilize everything. I'm not sure how contagious they are either, but I definetely don't want that happening again. It was a very bad situation and I'm still sad when I think about it. :(

Herpesvirus is troublesome, but does not seem to affect Red-foots as much as it does Euro-African species.

If you need some ideas for the Red-foot, you might find stuff in the Library in my signature below.
