Hi everyone,

This is my first post on this forum,

I am getting my first tortoise for my 21st birthday in a couple of months probably a Hermann tortoise.

My concern is that I also have a cat, so I was thinking of getting a cage(hamster type cage) to start off with. The tortoise will also be in a shut room for the first while when no one is in the house to keep them separate until they get used to each other.
Is this is the correct way to go?

Thanks in advance,

Ed

Hello and welcome to TFO

A hamster cage is far too small for any tortoise and is wrong for so many other reasons too

Please start by reading our Beginner Mistakes thread

What species are you thinking of getting? Each has different care requirements and we can give you more detailed information once we know

Ok that is noted, time to start designing a big table then!

Specific species I am not sure as of yet as am not sure what is available. Species I'm thinking of is a Hermann, maybe Eastern one as I have read they are a hardier tortoise and more used to the colder weather up in the North of England haha

Ah, I hadn't twigged that you're in the UK. I'm in Kent but grew up in North Yorks :)

The Testudo - Greeks, Russians (Horsfield) and Hermann's are all suited to our climate. (We've had our Greek for 46 years)

Care of all 3 is broadly similar especially when they're very small.

Here are the care sheets for the above

Hi and a very warm welcome to the forum! :)

The enclosure of a tort should be as large as one can possibly make it. These cute little animals are used to roaming around in the wild, wherever they please and however they please. :D
