Hi, just introducing myself and my tortoise Rollo. He is a red foot, about seven years old. We adopted him from another family about a year ago. He is an important member of our family, and loves kids. When my children have friends over he follows them around.
I am looking for suggestions to see if there is way to encourage Rollo to defecate in specific area; the previous owners said that he usually went in his water dish (consistent with what I read). However, once we got him he rarely used his water dish and just went anywhere in his enclosure ( I tried a variety of water dishes, including one identical to his old one). Of course, this was fine. After several months he started to urinate outside of his enclosure, and eventually defecate also (he spends several hours a day wandering free), and now he deliberately waits until he his out. His favoutire spot is under the dog bed! I do not expect to have a tortoise that is potty trained, :), however, from a cleanliness point of view I would like curtail his current habit as much as possible. We are very conscientiuous about cleaning up after him especially with children in the house. This means he has to be under supervision when he is out, which ultimately restricts his wandering time. He loves to wander and hang out with the human and animal members of the household.
I would appreciate any and all suggestions! Thank you, Lisa.

Hi and welcome! I really have no suggestions, except perhpas if you soak him before you let him walk around. Usually they use soaking time to eliminate wastes.

I understand what you are saying. I too have one about the same age. He also likes to be out to socialize with everyone. I soak him before he is let out, but no luck here. He has once gone in the bathroom on the floor. I was happy about that. But that was once..if you find out how to get them to go in one place, let me know...lol...

There's no way to train them sadly. Soaking seems to encourage pooping in the bath water which reduces risk, but doesn't eliminate it.

Joe isn't allowed in my carpetted rooms. Tiled floors only! They are easier to clean :)

Hello and Welcome.:) I have no idea about the potty issue, except what Jacqui has already said. However, I do want to warn you that dogs and tortoises do not mix. Many, many, tortoise deaths and mangled because owners thought they could trust their dog and two seconds of not watching and the dog got the tort. Please do not ever let the dog be around the tortoise without CONSTANT supervision.
