Any of those 3 would be a great choice, It will probably all boil down to which one you like the best ( looks and what not)

Hello, WELCOME :D I like coconut coir the best for substrate. Holds in moisture really well and won't mold. Good luck on your decision making and getting your new tort. Don't forget to introduce him/her to us when you get it, include pics:D

I think the Russian has the best personality of those three, closely followed by the hermanni. I find the Hermanns the most attractive of the three. It's all personal preference really. All three can be great tortoises. Can you go to a reptile show and see them first hand?

Hmmm I might go with a russian or a hermann. But where would you buy one? I know I still have a lot of research before buying one but I dont want to go to petco or petsmart because they are usually not healthy but wheres a good place to buy one?

welcome and tbh my first tort was a red footed. It really depends on what kind of personality your looking for but any of those 3 sound good. A good substrate is cyprus mulch, thats what I have been using and it works really well for humid and arid environments. I did however go to petsmart but like you stated they arent always in the best condition, however, you can examine them and ask them what they have honestly been feeding the tort before you buy him. I "rescued" mine from petsmart because they feed him freeze dried food when I state that fresh is best. Just make sure that when you get him you take him to a reptile specialist in your area for a fecal examination. Its very important you do so and doesnt cost more than 40-80 bucks. Hopes this helps

Hey new here

Hello everyone, my name is Sean I posted here a long time ago and I haven't used it in so long so I forgot a lot of information, first off I wanted to tell everyone that I hope they had a merry Christmas (if you celebrate it) and I hope Santa was good to everyone! Okay, back to the tortoises. I think that I want a sulcata tortoise ( I am aware of the size) I'm new to this species and I was wondering if I can just get the basic care instructions. I believe it comes from the desert area so the tort table would be desert like. I'm just wondering care , tort table / container and feeding and where to get them, thank you for replying and any information would be greatly welcomed !!

Thanks!
Sean Kennedy

RE: Hey new here

Hi Sean, and welcome back to the Forum!

It is old school, and a misconception that sulcatas require a desert-like environment. If you get a baby sulcata, quite the opposite is true, as they hatch out during or after the monsoon season, when grass is plentiful and the ground is humid and shady.

If you go to the Sulcata section, there are some really good threads about caring for sulcatas in the "important threads" section at the top of the sulcata section.
