Hi everyone,
I just joined the forum because I am getting my first tortoise in October, an Eastern Hermann's tortoise. I currently have 3 cats, a parakeet, and a red eared slider! I look forward to learning as much as I can about tortoises!

Does anyone have cats? I am curious to hear how cats react to tortoises. When I get Tilly the tortoise in the fall, I will keep her in a Rubbermaid container with all the necessary items as instructed by Garden State Tortoise. I am thinking my cats will think I got a brand new litterbox for them! I expect Tilly will be to be either covered or in a room separate from the kitties. Any thoughts or advice?

Hello, Patty P, and a very warm welcome to Tortoise Forum.
Have a look at http://www.tortoiseforum.org/threads/beginner-mistakes.45180/
and http://www.tortoiseforum.org/threads/sticky-hermanns-tortoise-care-sheet-updated.101410/
for loads of good information.
And closed chambers are often better anyway, regardless of kitties.
See http://www.tortoiseforum.org/threads/closed-chambers.32333/
Cats are not as dangerous as dogs for torts, but there have been incidents. The litter tray thing has also happened. At best the tortoise would be disturbed.
I wouldn't allow them to mix, myself.

Many thanks Adam. I read the beginner mistakes and it is so helpful. And I think I have the hermanns care sheet memorized. I am so excited over getting the tortoise, I am like a child waiting for Christmas!

Welcome to the forum. I also keep my cat away from small tortoises. She trys to play with my adults outside. They ignore her even when she ponces on them.

A very warm welcome to the forum! :D

Please do not forget to post pics of your tort and his/her enclosure.;)

As far as cats are concerned, I do not have one. As a matter of fact, I thought of getting one in the past, but I did not want to risk anything: I do not think that torts and cats can live "side by side" in peace. Know what I mean? :)

Ok. I doubt the cats would be interested in the tort because they are scared of my red eared slider but they may mistake the enclosure for a litterbox! The tortoise will be kept in a separate room.

Does anyone get their tortoise(s) microchipped? I know it is a very common practice in the UK.

I've read a lot of tortoise and cat posts and most of what I've learned is:

Cats will use a tortoise enclosure for a litter box.

Tortoises eat cat poop.

Cats also like to sleep on top of tortoise enclosures.

But I've never read of a cat harming a tortoise.
Dogs, yes.
